With Luis Diaz's future uncertain, Liverpool failing to renew the Colombian early in 2025. Sights could return to Anthony Gordon, with the winger ready to push for the move if needs be.
In last summer's transfer window, Newcastle United was in a financial crisis with the club facing the possibility of fines and point deductions over the Premier League's financial fair play rules, otherwise known as FFP. Amid this crisis, NUFC offered players to other clubs in order to balance the books; Liverpool was offered both Alexander Isak & Anthony Gordon. Liverpool politely declined the Alexander Isak proposal due to the price but took a huge interest in pursuing a deal for boyhood LFC fan Anthony Gordon. JamesWilliam previously reported back in June that the club was in the midst of advanced negotiations with Newcastle over a deal for Anthony Gordon, which was true. So advanced, the clubs agreed on a proposal that involved Joe Gomez heading to Tyneside + cash; however, talks fell through when NUFC found agreements with Brighton & Nottingham Forest for external deals, ending their crisis.
Liverpool opened contract talks with Luis Diaz over extending his deal back in January; however, talks came to a standstill. Diaz is greatly appreciated amongst many European leagues, with the Colombian having Barcelona & AC Milan both interested in him. Also suitors in the Saudi League that would be ready to test the waters with an eye-watering price. Luis Diaz is entering the final two years of his contract. Despite belief, the winger has been one of the best in his position this season, a general consensus around the club that Arne Slot has massively improved his game. Steadily outperforming his xG/xA (9.99)/(4.34) with 12 goals & 5 assists this season in the Premier League. You can see why the club is trying once again to renew the winger, although there is a belief that Liverpool could look to reinforce the left wing position regardless; however, the candidate could be significantly younger rather than the possibility of a player in the age range of an Anthony Gordon/Rodrygo.
Anthony Gordon pushed for the move, telling his agency that this would be the biggest move of his career, to play for his boyhood club alongside his best friend Curtis Jones. Reports emerged during the EURO 2024 campaign that within the England camp, Gordon was rejoicing with his teammates. LFC vice-captain singing ''he's coming home,'' The medical area of the England camp in Blanenhaink was prepped with Gordon set for his medical with LFC. However, fast forward 10 months, and Anthony Gordon has committed his future to NUFC, and Liverpool played a poker face in the 2024 summer transfer window. The 20-time champions now look for reinforcements with a summer regeneration vastly approaching, and Anthony Gordon would top the long list of suitable candidates to replace Luis Diaz should the club fail to renew him this summer. There have been reports of Rodrygo being ready to leave Real Madrid this summer, with Michael Edwards once listing him as the 'golden boy.' It wouldn't come as a shock if LFC tested their hand at the Brazilian.
